Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings and Habitat for Humanity Greater Orlando & Osceola County President & CEO Catherine Steck McManus held a groundbreaking ceremony on March 30 to celebrate their combined efforts to provide Central Floridians with affordable opportunities to become homeowners.
With the creation of the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, Orange County staff has been empowered to identify opportunities within our County’s real estate holdings to transform land into affordable housing options for our residents.
“Our dedicated housing staff has left no stone unturned. What you witnessed at this groundbreaking, in Holden Heights, is the County donating surplus lots to Habitat for Humanity so that we can be a part of the affordable housing solution,” said Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings.
Habitat Orlando & Osceola will build 19 homes on lots in Holden Heights, five of which were donated by Orange County Government.
There are three floorplans, including two 3-bedroom and one 4-bedroom layouts, each includes two baths and outdoor storage closets, starting at $200,000. There is down payment assistance available for potential homeowners who qualify and participate in the homeownership program.
“Habitat for Humanity Greater Orlando & Osceola County is driven by the belief that everyone deserves a safe and affordable home,” said Steck McManus. “I would like to thank Orange County Government and Mayor Demings for not only sharing this vision but helping us continue to make it a reality.”
This project was made possible because of Mayor Demings’ Housing for All initiative. As part of its 10-year action plan, Orange County would provide surplus lots to developers to create more affordable-housing stock in Orange County.
The project is expected to be completed over the next two years. Habitat Orlando & Osceola is currently accepting applications from Central Florida residents aspiring to become homeowners.
